Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

This patient is a 60 year old man that smoked for about 30 years. Lately he is having trouble climbing stairs without stopping half way due to shortness of breath and chest tightness. He has a constant cough and at night he hears himself wheezing.

  • Shortness of breath after walking short distances
  • Wheezing and chest tightness
  • Cough with thick phlegm in the mornings
  • Inability to take a deep breath

  • The damage is done and COPD cannot be reversed.
  • Causes of COPD:  Smoking / Air Pollution / Chemical Fumes / Dust
  • Patients compare COPD to the feeling of breathing through a straw.
  • As the condition worsens, sufferers often have difficulty carrying out daily tasks, such as walking up stairs and cooking.
  • People with COPD are more susceptible to colds, flu, and pneumonia.

  • Quit Smoking
  • Take your COPD medication exactly as your doctor has instructed
  • Stay active
  • Healthy diet
  • Flu shot yearly
  • Pneumonia vaccine
  • Regular doctor visits
